I visited the Standard Tap for the first time as an out of town visitor here for philly beer week 2013 and I must say this is the kind of beer bar that any hophead would be proud of. The food was fantastic and the beer was among the freshest, and best tasting, I have EVER tasted in my life and I do a lot of traveling - and drinking. The Standard Tap lived up to the hype for me. I just wish there were not 100 other events going on this week that are drawing me away from simple nights here. I can see myself frequenting here in future visits to Philadelphia.
PROS:Fantastic local beer.

i've been coming to this place for over 5 years and really considered this to be a great spot with great people. Always brought in friends from in and out of town and tried to bring in customers to support this place. I, myself, spent over 7 years bartending in Philadelphia bars and restaurants so I understand how important it is to support local places so they stay open. In my 10 year living in the city I have never through id actually be posting something to discourage people from going to eat and drink at a place but this is exactly why i'm writing this post.
Over the last few months I have been treated extremely rudely by an upstairs bartender by the name of Kate...if you have gone there i'm sure you have seen her, she is always there on Sat night at the upstairs bar. Blonde hair, a bit over weight, and constantly looking mean. I have no idea what I have ever done to her but she has always been extremely rude to me and anyone I had with me. Later I realized it wasn't just me but mostly everyone that comes in contact with her. I'm not a rude or drunk person and always tip over 20% when i go out since I was the person behind the bar for so many years. After going to this place almost every Sunday for the last 2 years and bringing a large group of people with me where we normally spend around 1,000 dollars together you would imagine the restaurant management and owners would appreciate that. Especially since Sunday is a slow day for many places down town. Well not at Standard Tap!!!! Customers here do not have any say or respect and really they can care less whether you come in or not, as far as they are concerned if you do not take the bad treatment then go somewhere else.
This is really appalling especially in such an economy.
I decided to do the adult thing and write an email to the management explaining what has been going on and how I feel quite wronged and treated badly by someone who works for them. Thinking that a manager who cares about the business and customers of the establishment she/he works for would care and want to resolve such an issue. WAS I WRONG OR WHAT!!! Instead of asking me any questions or trying to resolve the problem, the manager ( i do not believe even told the owners the issue) emailed me back telling me, well if i don't like it then i'm not welcome and my friends are not welcome to Standard Tap. All i can say i how appalling and sad for this restaurant's owners because they will not be able to stay in business in such an economy if their staff treats their customers in such a manner. I can say that now I feel a duty to let other Philadelphia residents know that such bad treatment exists and they should not support a place that will take their money and will not care how they get treated.
PROS:Great food
CONS:Female Bartenders are mean and rude. Especially the blonde, Kate, that works on Sat and Sun nights. if you want to be treated like dirt then go visit her at the tap. she acts like she is doing you a favor by even serving you.

Stnard tap has been and will continue to be one of the citys best beer bars. The taps are always seasonally rotating, the food is an eclectic mix of american bar food and upscale culinary fusion. Most taps are occupied by local brewers like troegsm stoudts, philly brewing, yard, just to name a few. The scene is laid back, friendly conversations with emphasis on good food and great beer - and pretty killer tunes on the jukebox!

Had a chance to stop in for brunch yesterday (Sunday), and it was phenomenal. The menu had french toast, pancakes, steak and eggs, homefries, beef stew, burgers, a raw bar with oysters and clams, and all the standard beers that make Standard Tap so awesome. I went with the Breakfast Bagel (bacon, egg, cheese with homefries)and a few beers (Stoudts APAs:so f'in good). Friend had bloody mary that looked great, and steak and eggs which looked fantastic. The place was packed so we had to go upstairs but that wasn't a problem since that bar has lots of taps and plenty of seating. Just another reason to go to Standard Tap besides beer.
PROS:Food is so good. Best beer.

Standard Tap is a great beer bar in Northern Liberties. I went there las tnight and enjoyed some great beers. A few I remember are Philly Brewing Company and a hand pumped Yards ESA. There are 10 beers on tap and they are clearly chosen by beer afficionados bc they were all very unqiue. This is not your place for a MIller Lite! THis is about as good a beer pub as I have seen. Dimly lit, jukebox, and beer.
PROS:Great beer, knowledgeable service, laid back

If you like beer, Standard Tap is about as good as it gets. Located in an old building, Standard Tap has a neighborhood pub feel. There is a small dark wood bar with well-versed servers pouring one of their 12 or so beers from their taps, including a cask-conditioned set of taps. There is a jukebox and a bunch of tables scattered around the inside usually filled with people eating and drinking excellent beers and wines. Yesterday we stopped in for a few beers and I was really happy with the selection on the chalkboard hanging behind the bar. The beers ranged from a hand pumped Yards E.S.A to a Reading Lager to a Troegs Wheat. There is definately something there for everyone, and the wine also seemed worthy of prase. The Yards ESA that came from the cask conditioned pump was one of the smoothest, satisfying beers Ive had in a long time, and the Reading Lager was smooth as well. The Troegs Wheat was more of a bad choice by me than a bad beer. I should have tried it on another day when I wasn't drinking darker beers, but yesterday it tasted way to fruity and lambic-like. Overall, we had a great time here for a couple hours and I recommend it strongly to anyone who likes unique beers. Im excited to check back in a month or so and see what they have on tap next.

FYI - Parking is tough so try and find a spot on 2nd if possible, but otherwise you gotta take what you can find on a side street which definately is a negative

Special Drinks:Beer is what they are known for....although they do offer a small, but unique wine list

Environment:Standard Tap is a well known beer bar in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. The bar itself is simple in design with dark wood decor and dim lighting. The beer selection rotates often and always features some incredibly tasty and unique brews from around the country, and world. Recently they were serving a handful of great beers including Red Fox Red Ale, Golden Monkey, Samuel Adams ESA, Yards Saison, to name a few. The food is very good and ranges from burgers to mussels and basically anything else you would expect from a 'pub style' menu, and it is all very good. There is a jukebox so you can play some tunes while sipping on some fine beer, but besides that it is the beer and the people that make Standard Tap such a popular spot, especially for beer afficionados.
